Senator Nasheed released from jail; says her arrest was a message to protesters

ST. ANN, MO (KPLR) – After spending the night in jail, Senator Jamilah Nasheed walked out of the St. Ann Police jail Tuesday just before 11 a.m.  Nasheed was arrested around 8:30 p.m. Monday in Ferguson when she refused to get out of a road.

Nasheed told reporters she went to Ferguson with the intention of being arrested.  She said she was engaging in an act of civil disobedience to find justice for Michael Brown.

“I wanted to send a message to all of the protesters that we have a long road ahead of us these next few weeks,”  Nasheed said.  “It’s okay to protest.  It’s okay to be arrested.  But it’s not okay to destroy communities. It’s not okay to burn down businesses. It’s not okay to protest violently in the name of Michael Brown.”

She’s facing charges of failure to comply with a police officer…
